Together with Wouter Kroeze, Artfort is a response to the competition to create an art space at an old weapons depot for the 19th century Fort at Vijfhuizen.

The brief was quiet heavy on the conservation of the depot, and the creation of an indoor climate that is suitable for art so we proposed treating the fort as an artifact. So we put it in a vitrine while simultaneously creating a climate machine out of this encapsulating, double-shelled greenhouse. The building collects warmth in the summertime, stores it in modified ammunition bunkers, and releases it back into the depot during the winter, saving greatly on energy costs and making the ideal climate for art possible, year-round. Manipulating the form of the double-shelled greenhouse further we introduce a new intermedium terras space that fits the new program well, creating a new and playful spatial dynamic for this new art hub outside of Amsterdam.
